Film Marketing – How to get awesome traffic for your movie!

A little while ago we ran this competition for Peroni Nastro Azzurro with a little known film Director, Gabriele Muccino. He’d done a few small movies such as The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds, both with Will Smith. I think they grossed only a few tens of millions. And then we discovered something interesting…

We had to promote the competition to get everyone’s interest, and that was brilliant, but the site was new, had about zero page rank from Google (meaning it was difficult to find) and no one knew who on earth we were. So we thought we’d build the Peroni Microsite and then tell a few friends about the competition, and promote it on our twitter and facebook pages. We figured, word of mouth right?

What we also did, was make a video about the project (which GM kindly starred in) and put that all over the internet using Tube Mogul, and linked back in every post to our Peroni Microsite by putting the URL in the description and adding tags that were relevant, link GM’s previous films. We also heavily bookmarked the page using the best free tool out there ‘Social Marker’ (if you’re a member of OFC you will have seen a post about how our formula and sequence for how to get traffic to your movie).

And then something INCREDIBLE happened. Let me show you….

Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Gabriele Muccino Ranking

Peroni Nastro Azzurro Microsite Ranking for One Fat Cigar

YES THAT IS NUMBER 9 ON GOOGLE OUT OF 286,000 Competitors!!!!

The only site that ranked above us were Peroni themselves, Wikipedia and some place where you could actually buy Peroni beer!!!

Craig and I were stunned. We’d built OFC in a way that it should work like this, but we’d never tried anything to get this sort of result, and we never expected to do so well on our first attempt. And it gets better!

What we also didn’t tell anyone was that the Peroni Microsite was simply a project just skinned in Peroni styling. By adding ‘jobs’ (technically they were competition vacancies, but who’s to argue the point) to the project we created more relevant links, and we also bookmarked each ‘job’ using social marker meaning that each ‘job’ also had incoming relevant links. (If we’d wanted we could have also added some video here using tube mogul, and maybe should have done.)

How is this relevant for you?

Well we simply set up a project on OFC and directed relevant linked keywords back to it (i.e. in the title of the posts, description and the tags we put Peroni Nastro Azzurro).

So if you wanted to know how to get traffic to your production, get to page 1 on google and build a fan base, that’s how.

Make a video under 10 minutes about your production and then tell everyone to follow it on OFC, using Tube Mogul, Facebook and twitter, and back link it using Social Marker.

p.s. this screen grab was taken as of this morning.
